Recently, videos of people recording themselves playing gaining popularity on YouTube.
The game itself has a very simple concept. Armed with only your flashlight, you must wander through a forest at night and collect the eight pieces of paper hidden within it. However, once you collect the first paper, you begin to be hunted by the Slenderman, a tall, faceless figure with long limbs and tentacles protruding from his back. You cannot do anything but run from him . He can force you to turn and look at him, which will result in an instant game over, due to your character going insane.
This is the reason these webcam videos have become so popular.
The fact that you are being followed combined with the scary music that builds as you collect each piece of paper causes players to become terrified without even seeing the Slenderman.
Some notable YouTubers who have done this include Tobuscus (under the account TobyGames), PewDiePie, and AttackingTucans.
Slender: The Eight Pages has very humble beginnings. It all began on when a challenge was issued on the Something Awful forums to create Photo Shopped paranormal pictures. The pictures with the Slenderman exploded, with people going so far as to create a realistic myth and convince others it was real.
Eventually indie-game developer group Green Meteor Team created the game Slender as part of a horror game contest. Now a sequel called Slender: The Arrival is in development; however, unlike its prequel, it will not be free to download.
